Betting tax abolished

Punters will no longer be taxed for having a bet after today’s Budget brought in sweeping changes to the betting duty system.

Chancellor Gordon Brown announced that bookmakers would be taxed on their gross profits at a rate of 15%. He is scrapping the system in which the Government collects betting duty of 6.75% from bookmakers, which is passed on to punters in a 9% tax.

Bookmakers can absorb all the costs of the new tax themselves, allowing punters to bet tax-free in this country.

The changes will come into effect from Janaury 1 next year.

The Chancellor’s action was designed to stem the loss in betting turnover to the offshore market which already offers punters tax-free betting.

“This is fantastic news,” said Warwick Bartlett, chairman of the British Betting Offices’ Association. “Our members have been badly-hit by the attractions of tax-free offshore betting – now I’m sure all the punters will come back again. I might even start betting myself!”

William Hill chairman John Brown said: “The British punter wins because this will make it possible for us to offer deduction-free betting for the first time since betting shops were introduced 40 years ago.

“The Treasury wins because at this level of duty we will be able to repatriate our offshore bookmaking operations, so the taxman will share in all the profits we make on our fast-growing international business.

“UK plc wins because we have a real opportunity to be the world’s leaders in on-line betting and turn the bookmaking industry into a big earner of foreign currency.

“The international potential is huge. poker online We have the best-regulated bookmaking industry in the world and punters from every country want to bet with us. The internet makes it possible for them to do so, and this new rate of duty means that all the benefit will stay in this country.”

Tote chairman Peter Jones said: “This is great news for punters and for bookmakers who will now be able to offer deduction-free betting. Turnover could increase by 50% or more as a result of this initiative.”

The Tote’s online betting arm, Totalbet, had secured a license in Malta from which it intended to trade to British and international punters.

However the transfer of the business will not now take place and Totalbet will concentrate on marketing to punters both in and outside Britain.

And Coral’s internet division, eurobetm, will relocate to Britain from Gibraltar.

Bob Scott, Coral Eurobet’s chief executive, said: “This is a bold and enlightened decision by the Government and great news for the betting and racing industries and for our customers.”

The repatriation of Eurobetm, which generated turnover of over £400 million from non-UK customers in the past financial year, will now provide additional revenues for the Treasury via the new Profit Tax.

The popularity of this move for the betting public prompted Coral Eurobet to shorten Labour to 1-10 to win the General Election with the Conservatives being eased out to 9-2.

A quick look at UK sportsbook activity for the FIFA World Cup

With the FIFA World Cup a tantalising two weeks away from kickoff, teams, coaches, fans and, of course, sponsors and sportsbooks are gearing up for an epic month. The tournament will run from June 14th through to July 15th, with fixtures of the group stages now fully available for viewing.

Naturally there is the anticipation of a huge amount of wagering surrounding this mammoth and somewhat infamous global spectacular, generally expected to be far and away the biggest international betting event of the calendar year. All the sportsbooks are ramping up their efforts to get customers to click bets on their site rather than a rival, and some rather impressive offers and promotions are in the mix.

Unibet are teaming up with former footballers Didier Drogba and Djibril Cisse, who are acting as the coaches of two competing celebrity teams vying to provide the operator’s customers with more accurate guidance on how to bet World Cup matches. The stated goal of the programme is to enable consumers to make more informed bets during the tournament. They will run a series of videos in which the teams attend international locations and place bets on important local games.

Alison Sams, head of Brand and Creative Services at Kindred Group, said about the promotion: “With the right tools, we can help our customers make more informed bets, and we aim to do that with this content series… in a light-hearted and fun way that appeals to a younger, smartphone connected audience.”.

Quite a few bookies, poker domino and at least three major ones, suffered six-figure hits when Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in the 2018 Champions League Final last Saturday. Licking their wounds, they’ll naturally be keen to make a killing in the World Cup to make up for it. Kindred Group lost heavily on the result; bet365 reportedly lost several million.

LeoVegas are revamping their site in time for the World Cup, adding a quick deposits function as well as better navigation for mobile devices and streamlined access to real-time statistics. DraftKings are betting on a March Madness-style bracket and have partnered with Jägermeister to create a community-based betting action supporting a specific nation. Their Meister Leaderboard will provide prizes for high scores, including, for top scorers, an all-expenses paid trip to the winning team’s home country.

Still, though, you almost have to say that the Stars Group is probably topping all the competition with their absolutely sick offer of £100 million in prize money to anyone who can correctly predict the outcome of all 64 World Cup Matches, win, lose or draw. The craziest thing about this promotion, apart from the sheer audacity of the top prize’s size, is that it’s open to anyone to play and is entirely free to enter. Crazy times are clearly ahead, and this move should surely pull a lot of punters their way. Almost time for kickoff, guys. Best of luck!

More recently,  daftar poker the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals decided a case between a season-long fantasy company and MLB Advanced Media, an affiliate of MLB, over the ownership of data that facilitates the production of fantasy games.

The Eighth Circuit said: “the information used in CBC’s fantasy baseball games is all readily available in the public domain, and it would be strange law that a person would not have a First amendment right to use information that is available to everyone. It is true that CBC’s use of the information is meant to provide entertainment, but “speech that entertains, like speech that informs, is protected by the First Amendment because `the line between the informing and the entertaining is too elusive for the protection of that basic right.’””

Where does this ownership of sports data come from?

While the above-mentioned cases may appear to be less than favorable to the ability of sports leagues to demand compensation from gambling operators, overseas a series of cases in the last decade have reached slightly different conclusions and may serve as a basis for the call for data rights compensation.

Football Dataco Ltd. v. Sportradar GmbH & Sportradar AG

The case involved Football Dataco, who was contracted with various UK soccer leagues to manage data generated from matches in real-time and facilitate its distribution.

Sportradar was providing results of matches over the internet. Dataco claimed that Sportradar had infringed on their proprietary database by using information contained therein to facilitate the production of information on Sportradar’s own website.

The decision from the European Court of Justice ECJ is primarily focused on jurisdictional issues associated with online products and targeting of persons in different locales within the European Union and the responsibilities of complying with national laws, but did find that Football Dataco had protected interests in their databases. In the sports betting context, the ruling was meaningful because it supported the finding of a sui generis right in the creation of databases under the European Union’s database directive.

Delaware an open book for sports bets

The market for legal sports gambling in the United States widened significantly Tuesday with expanded betting in Delaware, putting legal wagering within driving distance of three major East Coast cities less than a month after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for states to accept the bets.

Instead of flying to Las Vegas or betting illegally, fans in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington can make a short drive to legally bet in Delaware on the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Final or the World Cup. More states are likely to join the action by the time the NFL starts its season in the fall.

“Giants and Yankees, all day, every day,” Manhattan native Karriem Keys said Tuesday after betting on the New York Giants to win the Super Bowl next year.

Keys, 53, who now lives in Dover, poker domino was one of a couple of dozen people laying down early wagers at Dover Downs as Delaware became the first state outside of Nevada to offer legal gambling on individual sporting events.

“In New York, we would go right to the corner store, to the bodega, and bet,” Keys said. “That’s not legal, but, you know, everybody was doing it. But now it’s legal so it’s great.”

Gov. John Carney had the honor of placing the first bet, wagering $10 on the Philadelphia Phillies to beat the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.

“I’m a big sports fan, a big Philadelphia sports fan,” said Carney, who traveled to Minnesota in February to watch the Eagles win the Super Bowl.

Dover Downs casino workers took in 36 bets within the first 20 minutes of legal wagering. The offerings at Delaware’s three casinos include bets on professional baseball, football, hockey, basketball, soccer, golf and auto racing.

Rocket man?

Soon-to-be free agent LeBron James will look for a contender to close out his career. Miami Herald columnist Greg Cote says the Houston Rockets are the front-runner for the King’s services.

“Forming a triumvirate with James Harden and close friend Chris Paul would give James and Houston the firepower to challenge Golden State,” Cote wrote. “Paul also is a pending free agent but would re-up in a heartbeat to finally play alongside his buddy.

“Who knows, LeBron might even fill up the old Banana Boat by bringing over his friend D-Wade from Miami. The one negative: LeBron would be leaving the relative comfort of the Eastern Conference and wandering into the Warriors’ lair. No more free rides to the Finals.”

Topsy-turvy

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, feeling his world getting turned upside down: “I covered boxing in Toronto last week and am going to Las Vegas today for the Stanley Cup.”

World Cup Betting Tips: Edinson Cavani a worthy Golden Boot candidate in Russia

The Uruguay frontman was the top scorer in South American qualifying and a fortunate Group A draw means he’s an attractive selection to star once more

One of the most popular betting heats at the World Cup this summer will be the Golden Boot.

With Lionel Messi the 91 10.0 favourite in dabblebet’s latest top scorer market, backing the winner will prove a lucrative investment – but that is easier said than done with the vast array of candidates to choose from.

dabblebet also have a great offer available for punters aiming to identify the leading marksman in the tournament. Place a £25 single bet on your chosen player before the action gets underway and get a £2 free bet for every goal that they score in Russia, including extra time. T&Cs for this offer can be found here.

For example, if your player nets a hat-trick then a £6 free bet wil be credited to your account before 5pm the day after the match in question has taken place. The online bookmaker are also betting each way on this market at a ¼ the odds for the first four places.

Messi 91, Neymar 101, Antoine Griezmann 101 and Cristiano Ronaldo 141 lead the market but a shrewd bet could be Edinson Cavani at 251 26.0 with dabblebet.

The top scorer in South American qualifying with 10 goals, Cavani comes into this tournament off the back of a 28 goal Ligue 1 season for Paris Saint-Germain.

Uruguay are favourites to top Group A over Russia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt so the 31-year-old should be able to capitalise in the first three matches.

Provided by Goalm

Should the South Americans qualify as winners, a potential last 16 clash with Portugal is far from the toughest assignment, daftar poker assuming the European champions finish second to their Iberian neighbours Spain in Group B.

Capitalising on a relatively soft group is essential for Cavani given Uruguay are unlikely to make a genuine run to the semi-finals and beyond, but with Russia much the weakest side from Pot 1 plus two other very winnable matches, he could may hay in the early stages.

A record of 42 goals in 100 appearances for his country is very solid and the form shown over the past two years for Oscar Tabarez’s side means Cavani is a worthy selection at a much bigger price than the market principles.

Players also available further back in the betting include Diego Costa 201, Sergio Aguero 251 and Robert Lewandowski 281.

Hard Rock NFL Partnership Might Keep Its Atlantic City Casino on Sports Betting Sidelines

Hard Rock International is readying to open its Atlantic City casino later this month, but the company’s partnership with the NFL might prevent it from taking bets on professional football games.

Hard Rock, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, purchased the naming rights to the Miami Dolphins’ stadium in 2016 for $250 million. The 18-year contract is confidential, but some are wondering whether it might sack the casino operator from allowing its patrons to gamble on NFL games.

During a licensing meeting before the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, Hard Rock International CEO Jim Allen said the company indeed has “certain restrictions” in its stadium agreement with the NFL.

“We’ve reviewed those restrictions based upon our confidential agreements with the NFL, poker indonesia and the ownership of the Miami Dolphins. The Hard Rock brand anticipates participating in that particular venue within the confines of our specific treatments with the National Football League and the Dolphins,” Allen explained.

The Press of Atlantic City said multiple requests for further clarification went unanswered by Hard Rock officials.

NFL Policy

The NFL has never been a fan of sports wagering. Commissioner Roger Goodell remained opposed to gambling on football and other sports despite his colleagues leading other Big Four NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL leagues seemingly easing their positions.

Goodell also opposed the relocation of the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas for the start of the 2020 season. All but one NFL owner approved of the transfer, and that was none other than Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.

Unlike other pro sports leagues, NFL franchise owners are not permitted to hold substantial stakes in casinos or gambling-related businesses. But casinos and gaming entities can be sponsors of the NFL. Along with Hard Rock, FanDuel and DraftKings are such examples.

Attorney Irwin Kishner, who specializes in sports law, told the Press of Atlantic City this week that he would be surprised if Hard Rock’s contract with the NFL and Dolphins didn’t include some type of provision that requires the casino operator to stay clear of sports betting.

“In very substantial agreements, like a naming rights deal or a major sponsorship deal, it would not be unusual to have a provision that says, ‘This is subject to the rules, regulations, bylaws, etc., of the National Football League,’” Kishner explained. “I would strongly suspect there was a provision which covered sports wagering in the naming rights agreement.”

Atlantic City Impact

On June 28, Hard Rock Atlantic City will open its doors and unveil the more than $500 million casino makeover to turn the property from the Trump Taj Mahal into a rock ‘n’ roll-themed resort.

Like every other casino in town, management says the Boardwalk property is excited to enter the sports betting space. New Jersey lawmakers are currently deliberating regulations to govern sportsbooks in wake of the US Supreme Court’s repeal of the longstanding federal ban.

While specifics of Hard Rock’s NFL arrangement aren’t fully known, the company’s casino in Atlantic City presumably might avoid taking bets on pro football games to avoid potential conflicts. Or, at the very least, shun wagers on Miami Dolphins games.

DOVER, Del. — Delaware Gov. John Carney held a $10 bill with both hands before he handed it over to the sportsbook teller Tuesday afternoon.

Jason Minto, The News Journal Delaware governor John Carney places a bet on Tuesday’s Phillies-Cubs game, at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

Seconds later, Carney grasped the first single-game wager placed legally in the U.S. outside of Nevada in decades; a bet that his beloved Philadelphia Phillies would beat the Chicago Cubs.

“Gloating in this business doesn’t last very long,” Carney said inside the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino sportsbook. “We are happy to be first today. I don’t expect we will be the only one very long, but today it feels very good to be first.”

As Carney chatted with a gaggle of reporters, the second, third, poker domino fourth and fifth bets were placed – and the bettor made sure to let everyone know.

“Ready to roll! We are ready to roll,” screamed Stu Feiner, a well-known sports gambling advisor who traveled from Long Island to place $500 bets on the Pirates, Padres, Orioles and Reds.

Feiner told USA TODAY Sports he expected to gamble a total of $5,000 on Tuesday.

“I take dog expletive teams against the better teams,” Feiner explained. “I want to be in a room where there’s 100 people on one side and I’m the only one on the other.”

The news media here for the launch of sports betting far outnumbered those placing bets in the first hour after the sportsbook opened.

A couple hours after sports bet commenced in Delaware at 1:30 p.m. local time, there was a constant flow of bettors looking over the betting sheets heading to the counters to place bets.

There were also times that the four tellers on duty had nobody to wait on.

Ernie Anderson from the nearby town of Smyrna was eyeing Game 3 of the NBA Finals, unsure whether to put his money on the Golden State Warriors or Cleveland Cavaliers.

“They play tomorrow, so I have some time look at it,” Anderson said. “Every year, a friend of mine goes to Vegas and I send him with some money. Now, I don’t have to do that.”

Just as Delaware was the first state to enter the union, others will likely join the fray in the coming weeks.

That list includes two neighboring states: New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

It follows that sophisticated criminals in the U.S. capable of fixing, say, a college football game, daftar poker would far prefer to bet in an unregulated market, such as the Caribbean, than in the U.S. where scrutiny will be far more intense.

“Let me go as far as to say that the likelihood of corruption in things like college sports will actually go down in America thanks to the new legal situation,” Forrest said. “It will get a lot harder to fix games when there is oversight and transparency.”

States trying to legalize sports betting see the potential for new revenue, but the companies looking to take those bets warn that heavy licensing fees and taxes could kill the market before it even starts.

In Britain, betting companies are subject to a 15% tax on their profits, as well as being responsible for regular business taxes. Prior to 2001 there was a turnover tax imposed the people placing bets, which made gambling for challenging for anyone not blessed with extraordinary knowledge or remarkable luck. The move to the current system led to more competitive odds that gave gamblers a better chance of winning and led to the industry’s explosion.

Many British sports leagues and teams enjoy a partnership with the gambling operators. Sports administrators want their product to be clean – and bookmakers don’t want to be duped by offering prices on fixed games. The firms are required to alert authorities when suspicious bets are placed.

The relationships are also profitable. Darts might still be largely considered a pub game in the U.S., but the merry characters who fire handheld arrows at a circular target in Europe are superstars, with the best of them raking in seven figure paydays each year.

Each of the Professional Darts Corporation’s PDC nine biggest tournaments are sponsored by betting firms and that influx of money has helped to make darts the U.K.’s second most popular televised sport, behind only soccer.

“As with any sporting event, a fan’s engagement level can be raised when they have a vested financial interest in the outcome,” PDC chairman Matthew Porter said in an email. “Cash betting on-site is generally low-level, fun betting which enhances the entertainment aspect of the event and gives the fan another reason to have a memorable visit.”
